Sections Policy
The Journal of Evidence-Based Medical Research accepts submissions to the sections listed below. All sections marked as peer reviewed undergo double-anonymised review by a minimum of two independent external reviewers. Word counts exclude the abstract, references, tables, and figure legends. Authors should select the appropriate section at submission; the Editor reserves the right to reassign a manuscript to a more suitable section.
Original Research Articles
Reports of original empirical investigation, including clinical trials, observational studies, diagnostic accuracy studies, and health services research. Manuscripts must present previously unpublished data and make a clear contribution to evidence-based practice.
Structured abstract, 250 words. Main text up to 4,000 words. Maximum 6 tables and figures combined. Up to 50 references. Reporting must follow the relevant EQUATOR Network guideline (CONSORT for randomised trials, STROBE for observational studies, STARD for diagnostic accuracy, CHEERS for economic evaluations). Clinical trials must be prospectively registered, with the registry name and number stated in the abstract.
Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses
Comprehensive syntheses of existing evidence conducted according to a pre-specified protocol. Narrative reviews should be submitted to the Review Articles section instead.
Structured abstract, 250 words. Main text up to 5,000 words. Up to 100 references. Must comply with PRISMA 2020, with the completed checklist submitted as a supplementary file and the PRISMA flow diagram included in the manuscript. Protocol registration (PROSPERO or equivalent) is strongly encouraged and the registration number should be reported.
Review Articles
Critical, in-depth appraisals of a defined topic in clinical medicine or public health, situating current evidence within its wider context and identifying gaps for future research. Reviews should be interpretive rather than merely descriptive.
Unstructured abstract, 200 words. Main text up to 5,000 words. Up to 80 references. Unsolicited reviews are welcome; authors are encouraged to send a brief outline to the Editorial Office before submission.
Case Reports and Case Series
Descriptions of individual cases or small series presenting a novel condition, an unexpected association, an unusual presentation of a common disease, or a clinically instructive outcome. The report must convey a transferable lesson for practice.
Unstructured abstract, 150 words. Main text up to 1,500 words. Maximum 3 tables and figures combined. Up to 20 references. Must follow the CARE guideline. Written informed consent for publication is required from the patient or, where the patient is deceased or lacks capacity, from the next of kin or legal representative; a statement confirming this must appear in the manuscript. Identifying details, including uncropped clinical images, must be removed.
Short Communications
Concise reports of preliminary findings, pilot studies, negative results, or focused methodological observations that do not warrant a full-length article but merit dissemination.
Unstructured abstract, 150 words. Main text up to 2,000 words. Maximum 3 tables and figures combined. Up to 25 references.
Letters to the Editor
Substantive commentary on material published in the journal within the preceding twelve months, or brief observations of general interest to readers. Letters concerning a published article are ordinarily sent to the original authors, who are offered the opportunity to reply in the same issue.
No abstract. Up to 800 words. Maximum 1 table or figure. Up to 10 references.
Editorials
Commissioned commentary on topics of current relevance to evidence-based medicine, or on articles appearing in the same issue. Editorials are written by the Editorial Board or by invited authors.
No abstract. Up to 1,500 words. Up to 20 references.
